The Earth System Governance Project is proud to present the first seminar in the upcoming and recurring ESG Speaker Series at Utrecht University. The ESG Speaker Series is organized in collaboration with the Copernicus institute of Sustainable Development and Utrecht University.

In this first seminar, Professor Peter Bridgewater from the University of Canberra, Australia, will speak about the recent Global Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

A well-functioning IPBES is essential to provide the evidence base needed for competent earth system governance. From 2017 onwards, IPBES has reviewed its activities, a process co-chaired by Professor Bridgewater. This review was undertaken in the latter half of 2018 and produced a series of key recommendations.

In this seminar, Professor Bridgewater will provide his insights on the IPBES review, its key conclusions, likelihood of adoption of those conclusions, and the future for IPBES as part of the web of organizations needed for competent earth system governance.

The seminar will end with an interactive discussion about the complexities of navigating the science-policy interface, understanding the politics of earth system governance and the premises for which science can influence policy-making. During the discussion, Professor Bridgewater will be joined by Lecturer Sandra van der Hel of the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development.

Registration for the seminar is mandatory. Register here: https://www.formdesk.com/geo/esg
